Dive computers are a diver's best friend! They serve the same purpose as decompression tables, but do so dynamically and accurately account for ACTUAL dive profiles, thus they always allow more bottom-time in a more realistic calculation. Dive computers perform a continuous calculation of the depth (pressure) and time profile of the diver. Dive computers often provide additional information to the diver including air and water temperature, calculations used to help prevent oxygen toxicity (with Nitrox, for example), a computer-readable dive log. Recorded data can often be downloaded to a personal computer and provide a much more accurate dive log book and eliminate the hassle of manually recording all your dives. Computers are an important safety tool, and they extend your bottom time with more accurate calculations using your actual dive profile.
